Workday Finance Subject Matter Expert/Trainer
Overview
We are seeking an experienced Workday Finance Subject Matter Expert (SME) / Super User/Trainer to support a healthcare organization in optimizing, standardizing, and operationalizing its Workday Financials platform.
This individual will serve as the bridge between Finance, Operations, and IT — ensuring the organization is left with clear documentation, structured training plans, and defined policies that enable both current staff and new hires to confidently and consistently work within Workday.
This is not a pure configuration role. This is a strategic functional leader who understands what Workday can do and can translate that into operational policy, governance, and sustainable user adoption.
Key Responsibilities
Workday Functional Leadership
Serve as the primary Workday Finance SME and Trainer
Provide deep functional expertise across:
General Ledger
Accounts Payable
Procurement
Expense Management
Fixed Assets
Revenue Management (healthcare environment preferred)
Assess current system usage and identify gaps between system capability and operational process
Recommend configuration optimizations aligned to healthcare finance workflows
Advise leadership on what Workday is capable of doing versus legacy ERP limitations
Training & Enablement
Design and document comprehensive role-based training plans
Create detailed training blueprints and curriculum outlines
Develop:
Step-by-step job aids
Process flow diagrams
Standard operating procedures (SOPs)
Work instructions for common and complex tasks
Lead live training sessions (virtual and/or onsite)
Develop onboarding guides for new hires
Establish a sustainable internal “train-the-trainer” model if appropriate
Documentation & Knowledge Management
Document end-to-end financial workflows within Workday
Create a centralized knowledge repository for Finance users
Ensure documentation includes:
Clear task ownership
Role security implications
Required approvals
Downstream reporting impacts
Translate Workday configuration into business-readable policy documentation
Ensure organization is left with a clear operational blueprint post-engagement
Policy & Governance Advisory
Recommend finance policies aligned to Workday capabilities
Help define:
Approval hierarchies
Segregation of duties
Spend controls
Procurement governance
Align policies with healthcare regulatory and audit standards
Partner with compliance and internal audit teams as needed
Continuous Improvement
Identify opportunities to automate manual processes
Recommend reporting and dashboard enhancements
Evaluate system usage metrics and adoption effectiveness
Provide post-go-live optimization guidance
Required Qualifications
5+ years of hands-on experience with Workday Financials
Proven experience serving as a Workday Super User or Functional SME
Experience developing structured training programs for enterprise systems
Strong documentation skills (SOPs, training materials, workflow diagrams)
Experience working in a healthcare organization (hospital system, IDN, academic medical center, etc.)
Strong understanding of finance operations and internal controls
Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting a Workday Finance implementation or post-go-live optimization
Healthcare accounting, grant management, or revenue cycle exposure
Experience working with executive leadership on governance decisions
Familiarity with audit and compliance standards in healthcare environments
